Roaring success at NWL Sport & Health Awards at the Hermitage Leisure Centre

The NWL Local Sport Alliance Sport and Health Awards took place on 15th November and we were lucky enough to have journalists and photographers from Ibstock Junior School attending to report on the evening. Here is what they found…
Journalists from Ibstock Junior School were invited to a special awards ceremony, to write an article for North West Leicestershire SSP. Here we interviewed a famous swimmer named Harriet West and watched the awards being given.
The chairman for the Local Sports Alliance, Shane Fox, came up on the stage and explained what has happened in the last year. He talked about the competitions and about how we need to keep healthy and how to fix health issues.
Before the other prizes, there were many School Game Mark Awards received: 2 bronze; 16 silvers; 16 gold; 1 platinum.
The bronze school games mark went to Newbold and King Edward VII.
The silver games awards went to Ashby C of E, Ashby Hill Top, Belvoirdale, Blackfordby, Heather, Holy Cross, Hugglescote, Ibstock Junior School, New Swannington, St Charles, Swannington, Viscount Beaumont’s, Warren Hills, Woodcote, Worthington, Ivanhoe.
The gold school games mark went to Albert Village, All Saints, Donisthorpe, Ellistown, Forest Way, Griffydam, Measham C of E, Moira, Newton Burgoland, Oakthorpe, Packington, Sir John Moore, Snarstone, Thringstone, Willesley, Woodstone.The last of the school games award is the Platinum and it went to Broom Leys. The platinum award is given to someone who has won gold 5 times in a row.
Now we move on to the other awards. The primary school of the year went to Willesly and the runners up were Thingstone and Hugglescote. The secondary high school of the year went to Forest Way. The runners-up were Newbridge and Castle Rock. The next award was called the school team of the year and it went to Newbridge for their KS3 boys badminton team with the Girls Football team from Whitwick St John, and the Boys U16 Hockey team from Ashby School, finishing as runners-up.
After that, they handed out the Active Lifestyle Award and it went to Philippa David. Next, they told the audience who had won the junior volunteer award and it went to Leoni Fielding who had been extremely committed to her volunteering at Colville Town Football Club and throughout all the time of being there she never missed a single lesson – this just shows her commitment. The senior coach/volunteer of the year goes to Chrisse Dover who has given a large amount of her own time to volunteer at Willesley School, alongside having her own full time job and family. Disabled sports person of the year went to Freddy Bradley who had won titles for U15’s 100m, 200m and shot put events at the Leicestershire and Rutland Athletics Championships.
The Community Award was a draw with Colville colour run and the Coalville Diabetes Support Group, this just shows how hard the groups have been working. The next award was junior sportsman of the year the winner of this award went to Matt Stertan who has had an excellent 2018 season, which culminated with him securing 12th place in the National Junior ten mile individual time trial championship in Glasgow. Junior sport woman of the year is Eleanor Orm-Herbert. Eleanor is the Leicestershire and Rutland County U13 girls’ javelin champion. She has competed at the Leicestershire and Rutland county Championships, coming first in the U13 javelin, 1st in the U13 discus, and 1st in the U13 shot put. The senior sports person of the year went to Bonita Robinson who came 1st in the Longhorn Ultra 60K event in April. She also completed the Ultra Tour of Mont Blanc in August in under 46.5 hours, finishing as the 56th senior woman.
The junior team of the year 2018 went to Ashby Castle Lawn Tennis Club U12 Boys – they tried really hard to get it and were exhilarated when they won it. The senior team of the year 2018 went to New Lount Bowls club who were ecstatic when they won the award as they had to have tried so hard to earn this award. The outstanding contribution to sport went to Ed Kendall who has had an extremely successful year with his hockey teams. Finally the last award went to club of the year winners which went to Ashby Castle Tennis Club.
