On Wednesday 13th March children from 28 primary schools in the area gathered at Sir John Moore School for the NWL Primary Schools Cross Country League presentation evening. The event was the culmination of a season in which the children had run in races held at Broomleys Primary School, Measham C of E Primary School, Hugglescote Primary School and Sir John Moore Primary School. The series also serves as the selection for the county team who will be racing at Prestwold Hall on the 23rd March. The series of races are supported by the NWLSSP who were represented at the presentation by Stuart Johnson.
Overall this year 750 children had been involved which is an increase of 74 from the previous year and means that in 3 years the league has attracted over 200 more runners. Each individual race has only taken part due to the hard work of school staff and the support of volunteers.
League organiser Steve Wilkinson said during the event “ In a time when the media is full of reports of children and families becoming more inactive, it is great to see that with the support of NWLSSP, we can have huge turnouts to our events. The profile of school sport is high in our area due to the efforts of teachers and this must have massive benefits to the children in our schools.”
Children received individual medals and due to the league being sponsored by Dave the Beefarmer (www.beefarmer.co.uk) all the gold medallists received a jar of Dave’s finest local honey. After the presentation, Dave said “I believe time spent engaged in outdoor activities is good for the mind and healthy physical development. Healthy minds and bodies come from providing our children with exciting and challenging activities such as this competition and innovative projects such as ‘School for Bees’.”

Mrs Tae Carpenter, Headteacher at Sir John Moore School said after the event “I am so proud of the children who have used determination in the races this year. It is great to see the families at the finishing lines supporting their children and spending quality time together.”
