Alternative Sports – Flag Football delivered to over 700 pupils

Over the last few weeks we have delivered our chosen alternative sports sessions of Flag Football to over 700 pupils in 25 schools.
Flag Football is a non-contact version of American Football, where tackles are made by pulling off flags which all players wear on their hips (similar to Tag Rugby). The rules are similar to that of American Football with the attacking team having four attempts (downs) to reach a certain point on the field with the defensive team aiming to stop their progress by removing their flags. The attacking team has two options; they can either run with the ball or pass then run with the ball, no kicking is allowed. Teams score 6 points when they reach the end zone and can score either a 1-point (5 yards from end zone) or 2-point (10 yards for end zone) conversion. The team with the most points at the end of the game are the winners.
In the sessions, the focus has been on passing, as unlike in rugby the ball can be passed forwards via an overarm throw from the quarter back. Catching the ball is also a key skill in Flag Football as if the ball is dropped by the receiver, the team loses one of their downs, this has been another skill we have focused on in the sessions. Sessions have culminated with a game called the Gauntlet game, which has replicated a real Flag Football match with some adapted rules.
We would like to thank all schools where we have delivered sessions this year. All pupils have given their all and enjoyed learning and playing a new sport. Well done to all those that have participated.
