Last week saw over 300 Children, from 18 schools, take part in the Sports Hall Athletics competition which took place on 6th 7th & 8th November at Ibstock College.
The competition is a series of athletics events that include javelin, long jump, triple jump, vertical jump, medicine ball throw and speed bounce followed by a series of relay races. Schools receive points based on where they finish in each event and an overall winner is crowned at the end of the week.
On the first evening, Hugglescote were in impressive form, taking the win in 18 of the 24 events. Whitwick St John also recorded wins in both the boys and girls 2 x 1 relay races. Belvoirdale were winners of the boys long jump and girls javelin as well as being joint winners in the 4 x 1 boys relay. Thringstone took top spot in the boys javelin whilst Dovebank and Measham performed consistently well throughout the evening without winning any particular events.
There was a selection of strong performances on day 2 of competition as Holy Cross, Heather, New Swannington, Woodcote and Woodstone all battled it out. The girls from Willesley were particularly impressive, taking victory in the 2 x 1 lap relay, 6 lap paarlauf, triple jump, vertical jump and speed bounce – where their boys also won. New Swannington were quickest in the boys 2 x 1 lap relay and 6 lap paarlauf whilst Heather jumped furthest in the boys triple jump and Woodstone took top spot in the boys and girls long jump.
The final night of competition included Albert Village, Ashby C of E, Broom Leys, Griffydam, Ibstock Juniors and Viscount Beaumont. Broom Leys were quick in the track events, winning 8 out of 12 races on the night. Ashby C of E were consistent throughout the evening and took victory in 7 events. Griffydam won the boys obstacle race, narrowly beating Ibstock Juniors in their heat, and the girls javelin where Viscount Beaumont and Albert Village also threw impressive distances.
In the final standings, Ashby Willesley were the winning team who will now progress to represent North West Leicestershire in the Level 3 competition. They scored an impressive 376 points overall to finish over 50 points clear of runners-up Hugglescote.
Dovebank took home the spirit of the game award for their passion and determination throughout the evening as well as the respect they showed to the other teams.
The event was only possible thanks to a variety of people who made it happen. Ibstock College hosted the event providing their facilities for the week. Young Leaders from Castle Rock, King Edward’s and Ibstock were exceptional throughout the week as they set up equipment, measured and recorded scores and perhaps most importantly, provided encouragement to the children taking part.
