On Wednesday 14th January 3 schools with 8 teams attended the Boccia at Forest Way School.
Schools involved; Holy Cross, Woodstone, Warren Hills
The pool stage featured 9 games across 4 courts and were excellently officiated by young leaders from Forest Way who are undertaking the Sports Leaders UK qualification.
The pool stages set up the rankings for the quarter final stages, with each team now ranked 1 – 4 in each pool we were able to play them in an equal knock out stage. Due to the number of courts on offer we were able to keep everyone playing until the end of the tournament, allowing everyone to be ranked from 1 – 8.
After the first round of knockouts we saw Woodstone C, Holy Cross A, Woodstone B and Warren Hills C all progress to the semi-finals. After a strong game by Holy Cross A against Woodstone C which saw Holy Cross win 8-0 and a tight game between Woodstone B and Warren Hills C which finished 4-3 to Woodstone B.
We had a final between Holy Cross A and Woodstone B. After both teams won a game 1-0 each, it was all to play for in the final game. After a great first throw by Holy Cross, Woodstone did everything they could to block any more balls coming closer, however when Holy Cross was able to play the balls again they smashed a few balls out of the way and managed to get 2 balls in between Woodstone and the Jack (white ball) to win the final 3-1.
Holy Cross will now progress to the final between the winner from Ibstock to be crowned North West Leicestershire Finalist and represent NWLSSP at the county competition.
Spirit of the Game was awarded to Woodstone for all their teams respect and honesty throughout the event.
On Wednesday 14th January 5 schools with 7 teams attended the Boccia at Ibstock Community College.
Schools involved; Heather, Ibstock Jnr, Newbold, New Swannington, Oakthorpe
The pool stage featured 12 games across 4 courts and were excellently officiated by young leaders from Ibstock Community college who are undertaking the Sports Leaders UK qualification.
The pool stages featured some excellent Boccia, with most games finishing with only 1 point between them. At the end of the pool stages we went straight into the final with the top team from each pool going through.
The winner from Pool 1 was Ibstock Jnr B.
The winner from Pool 2 was Newbold.
In the final both teams were drawing 1-1 after the first 2 games, with everything to play for in the last game. After a great first throw by Newbold, Ibstock did everything they could to try and get as close to the Jack (white ball) as possible. However they only managed to encircle the 1 red ball that was close to the Jack. As soon as Newbold were able to play their balls again they smashed all the balls out of the way and managed to get 4 balls in between Ibstock’s balls and the Jack to win the final 5-1.
Newbold will now play Holy Cross in the grand final to see who will be our North West Leicestershire champion!
Spirit of the Game was awarded to Heather for all their teams respect and honesty throughout the event.
On Wednesday 14th January 2 schools attended the Boccia Festival at Ibstock Community College.
The Boccia Festival is a new event for this year and saw school try different Boccia challenges before playing a Boccia game against the other school attending the festival. Unlike the Boccia tournaments also being played at the same time the children playing in the festival do not need to have Special Educational Needs to take part.
Viscount Beaumont and Belvoirdale both took part in the first every Boccia Festival and were able to experience attending a competition without the stress of trying to win games against other schools.
A massive thank you to Forest Way and Ibstock Community College for allowing us to use their facilities for these event and providing fantastic officials for the events. A special thank you also goes out to Castle Rock, Forest Way, Thringstone and John Duggan for lending us equipment for this tournament. Without their support, we would struggle to hold 3 events in 1 day with 15 teams competing and a festival.
