Basketball has taken centre-stage for children in year 5/6 over the last couple of weeks with over 200 children taking part in competitions.
The first event took place at Castle Rock on 23rd January with teams from Ashby C of E, Broom Leys, Heather, Packington, Thringstone, Warren Hills and Woodcote all competing. Both teams from Broom Leys topped their groups, as did Woodcote A who were all joined in the semi-finals by Thringstone A who qualified as best runners-up. It was double success for Broom Leys as both their teams qualified for the area final with impressive wins in the semi-final. Congratulations should also go to Warren Hills who were awarded the spirit of the games award for the day.
On 24th January, another 12 teams headed to Ibstock to compete. Willesley, Donisthorpe, Ellistown, Ibstock Junior, Moira, Snarestone and Woodtone were all aiming to qualify for the area final and there was some quality basketball on display all round. Willesley A were undoubtedly the team of the day, conceding only 2 baskets in 5 matches as they won the days competition. There were also good performances from Moira, who having qualified as the best runners-up, beat group 3 winners, Donisthorpe, in the semi-final before eventually losing to Willesley in the final. Donisthorpe were also awarded the spirit of the game award after showing high levels of respect to the referees throughout the competition.
It was another hotly contested competition at Newbridge on 29th January with teams from All Saints, Belvoirdale, Hugglescote, Newton Burgoland and St. Clares all taking part. All Saints and Belvoirdale both had two teams involved and after some very close matches, all teams finished on 6 points in their respective groups with All Saints A and Belvoirdale B taking the runner-up places on points difference to qualify for the semi-finals. All Saints then took on St Clare’s who progressed from the group undefeated. In the other semi-final, Belvoirdale took on Hugglescote who also hadn’t lost in the completion. The two group winners continued their good form, both winning their semi-finals without dropping a point. In the final St Clare’s beat Hugglescote, scoring in the last seconds to win the match 4-2. All Saints were awarded the spirit of the games award for their teamwork and determination throughout the event.
The final competition saw teams from Newbold, Swannington, Viscount Beaumont and Whitwick St John head to Castle Rock on 1st February to see who would claim the last place in the final. The competition was intense but it turned out that the opening game of the evening was crucial as Whitwick St John A beat Newbold to set themselves up for an undefeated evening and progress through to the area final. Viscount Beaumont secured the spirit of the games award for their determination and self-belief in all their games.
Broom Leys A, Broom leys B, Willesley A, St Clare’s and Whitwick St John A will now compete in the North West Leicestershire final at Castle Rock on 20th February.
We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved in making the events a success. To Ibstock, Castle Rock and Newbridge who hosted competitions and to the Young leaders from the schools who helped with scoring at the events. A mention should also go to all the teachers and support staff from the Primary Schools who all ensured the smooth running of the events.
